University of Glasgow UK Jobs Description 2022

Job Purpose
To instruct and support members with their training requirements and to supervise two key fitness areas in the Stevenson Building (PowerPlay and Pulse).

Main Duties and Responsibilities

1. Responsibility for the supervision of the weight training (PowerPlay) and the cardiovascular (Pulse) areas of the Stevenson Building, ensuring the safety of members and a positive and engaging culture:
• Observe clients at all times in order to correct unsafe technique where required
• Responsibility for reporting any equipment faults to the, Active Lifestyles Lead, Duty manager, Operations Manager, or the Active Lifestyles Manager
• Ensure members understand and adhere to the University Sport gym standards/rules

2. Instruct and evaluate safe and appropriate gym based classes, courses, workshops, inductions:
• Using appropriate teaching methods to introduce a range of exercise, and adaptations to suit a wide range of capabilities and needs
• Provision of one-to-one and group inductions to members, correctly demonstrating usage of equipment (including safety features), promoting safe and effective exercise advice and using knowledge to answer a wide variety of member questions

3. Positively develop and maintain high standards of customer care to help foster a supportive and engaging ethos of the facilities.

4. Attend internal and external training as required to ensure product knowledge is current.

5. Promote the University Sport programme with the aim of increasing participation and specifically contribute to the programming of the two fitness areas:

Dimensions

University of Sport is a diverse department. This post holder with work as part of the Active Lifestyles Team within the Service Development Team. The remit for Service Development includes evaluation and development of the service programme, preparing and presenting communication materials to improve member education, training and development of staff, develop & support Sports Bursary programme. The person appointed will work as part of an integrated team delivering a high quality service to members.
Supported by other Health & Fitness staff responsible for the supervision of activity areas that have over 3000 members training on a daily basis.
Ensuring the safety of members within activity areas, delivering a variety of classes, workshops, inductions and drop-in’s to maintain and develop members health and fitness levels.
Cardiovascular activity area (Pulse) with 80+ pieces of CV equipment, stretch areas and resistance machines.
Muscle conditioning area (PowerPlay); 6 Platforms, 6 Racks, 24 Benches, 60 Dumbbells, 3 Plate loaded machines, 6 Resistance machines, Kettlebells, Bulgarian Bags, Medicine Ball Wall, Climbing Frame and a variety of other equipment Offering specialist health and fitness advice for all levels and abilities, offering adaptation and progression and where necessary referring members to appropriate Health & Fitness staff to assist members to improve their knowledge, understanding and development.

Job Features

Planning and Organising
Responsible for:
Planning and prioritising workload on a daily/weekly/monthly basis.
Supervision of activity areas, delivering and evaluating sessions offered.
Managing own time effectively on the activity areas, working responsibly and following safe working system. Contribute to the planning of the activity programme specifically in relation to the two fitness areas.

Decision Making

Responsible for:

Using specialist knowledge making appropriate decisions for appropriate adaptations and technique correction where appropriate.
Using initiative and judgement to resolve any issues in the two fitness areas, referring where appropriate to the Health and Fitness Manager Liaising with Health & Fitness staff in regards to any specialist populations to ensure appropriate advice is given.
Prioritising workload/duties.

Internal/External Relationships

Present a professional appearance and attitude at all times and maintain an excellent standard of customer service
Good communication with members and colleagues to build on going and positive relationships.
Work closely with Health & Fitness staff to create and develop activity areas that are inclusive to all members. Report any equipment issues or members misconduct to Duty Managers.
Attend internal and external training as required to ensure services and wider programme knowledge is current

Problem Solving

Regular problem solving of routine member enquires. Advising on alternative exercises to maximise the use of room resources and participation.
Provide advice for all levels of ability to exercise and participate using suitable/adaptable exercises.
Ensuring high standards are consistently maintained by taking appropriate action where necessary, by either using own initiative or referring to another member of relevant department staff.

Other
Overseeing and supervising members of a variety of abilities, levels and characters ensuring the two fitness areas are inclusive to all.

Terms & Conditions

Salary will be on the Management, Professional and Administrative Grade, level 4, £20,092 – £22,847 per annum, pro rata,

This post is offered on a part-time (15 hours p/w) and fixed-term basis to 16 April 2023.

New entrants to the University will be required to serve a probationary period of 6 months.
The successful candidate will be eligible to join the National Employment Savings Trust (NEST) Pension Scheme.
