The Commission has a two-fold mandate: to foster equality and to reduce discrimination. It fulfills this mandate through public education and community initiatives, through the resolution and settlement of complaints of discrimination, and through human rights tribunal and court hearings.

Role

Can you even imagine being in a job as important as advancing and protecting human rights for Albertans?  As a Human Rights Officer, part of your role will be to respond to confidential human rights and discrimination inquiries from the public, including members of groups protected by human rights legislation, employers, service providers, landlords, unions, and other potential respondents.  If your previous work experience has been in helping people find common ground, mediate issues, act as a conciliator, and educate the public on important social issues, you will feel at home with the Commission.  Using your exceptional communication skills, you will provide information on the Alberta Human Rights Act, including processes for making complaints, requirements for reasonable accommodation under the Act, and dispute resolution services.

You will also manage a caseload, where you will be responsible for interpreting and applying legislation and broadly outlined legal principles and policy (such as reasonable accommodation), assessing potential complaints, and providing investigation and/or conciliation services to resolve accepted complaints.  We know you are up for the task because you have exceptional analytical and fact-finding skills, excellent communication (verbal and written), strong interpersonal and relationship building skills, and the ability to lead systemic change processes.  Consider joining the team and making the impact that you have been looking for!

Qualifications

Related university degree (ex. Law, social sciences, social work) and a minimum of 4 years related experience.  The type of previous experience we are seeking is varied, such as experience with investigations, conciliations, mediations, legal work, social work or working in similar government program delivery services.  Experience interpreting legislation to unique situations is a must, and knowing how to organize/manage a diverse case load is an asset.  If you have previous work experience with the Alberta Human Rights Act and human rights principles, this would be an asset.

Equivalencies will be considered as follows:
Directly related education or experience considered on the basis of:  1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or 1 year of experience for 1 year of education.

•    Mediating and helping opposing parties achieve resolution
•    Collecting information that supports problem solving
