This is a high-profile role for a reporter who can focus on bigger-picture and enterprise stories, explaining to readers across the country how decisions made – or not made – at the court affect them and why. This reporter would collaborate with teams across the Network and in our 30-person Washington bureau and would have a deep understanding not only of legal issues but also policy and the politics and players involved.Our ideal candidate has strong storytelling skills, a range of writing styles and the judgment to know which circumstances call for which approach. A willingness to experiment with innovative ways to tell stories for audiences that come to us in increasingly diverse ways is a plus.

    Responsibilities would include coverage of the court as an institution (the justices, the cases, and how the court interacts with the other branches of government), as well as understanding which cases in the lower courts could become major ones.

    She or he will also partner with other journalists on video, graphics and data visualization, innovative presentations, and stories from around the country.

    This reporter will also have:

    • A fine-tuned sense of right and wrong and a keen understanding of how to make complex topics relatable.
    • A deep understanding of how to use records and data to answer questions.

In an increasingly complex and financially constrained environment, Gannett Fleming recognizes that safety, operating efficiency, state of good repair, stakeholder requirements, and risk mitigation drive program success. We provide planning, engineering, program delivery, testing, and commissioning services to the transit and freight rail industries and offer extensive experience in rail and bus systems, transit facilities, and civil and structural infrastructure. We deliver system expansions and upgrades for bus, commuter railroads, freight railroads, and light and heavy rail transit systems.

Our signal designers and engineers will develop drawings and plans, technical specification, technical reports, cost estimates and project schedules in accordance with our customers’ needs. Work may also entail the oversight of commissioning and testing during the implementation phase of a project.


Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Provide final signal designs for pre-wired locations and modifications to existing signal locations. Plans should be capable of being sent to a wiring shop when finished by the candidate.
  • Perform design calculations, prepare material and equipment specifications, and provide preliminary sketches and notes for drawings.
  • Perform system design layout and sizing for assigned projects.
  • Responsible to coordinate the design with other disciplines, attend design coordination meetings with team members and client representatives.
  • Prepare electronically generated drawings with accuracy, neatness, and speed, maintaining high quality and uniform standards of lines and lettering.
  • Review shop drawings, record changes and keep all disciplines informed of details and schedules.
  • Coordinate the contract documents with the construction personnel and participates (under supervision) in site inspections during construction as required.
  • Perform field data collection and/or field system verifications.
  • Perform studies and selection of equipment to fit the project design.
Minimum Qualifications
  • BS in an Engineering field preferred, candidates with multiple years of signal design and\or train control experience and\or control center experience will also be considered.
  • 5+ years of applicable experience.
  • Experience in multi-disciplinary programs.
