Job Description Summary The Department of Public Safety will support and emulate the mission, core values, and goals of Wentworth by providing a safe campus for students, faculty, staff, and visitors. These services are provided with the highest standards of inclusivity, transparency and accountability. 

The Institute Police Officer is expected to support the WIT community by following the organization’s and department’s values and polices. The Institute Police Officer will provide a full range of law enforcement and security services. This position will investigate calls, complaints, and suspicious activity and incidents, will enforce laws, maintain order, assist people, identify criminal activity, apprehend offenders, identify the source of problems in the WIT community, and work with other law enforcement agencies to resolve issues. The Institute Police Officer will support the department’s mission by respecting the rights and dignity of all individuals while completing the functions of their job.

This position will work both independently and cooperatively to provide pro-active police protection and crime prevention consistent with community policing standards. This position will ensure the safety of the WIT community in an orderly, efficient, and professional manner. It is expected that the Institute Police Officer will conduct investigations of issues and crimes which lead to identification, apprehension, and prosecution of offenders.

Minimum Knowledge Required Working knowledge of fundamental concepts, practices and procedures and ability to apply in varied situations. Uses instructions and guidelines to perform the job safety function. Periodic training will be required.
Preferred Knowledge Comprehensive knowledge of theories, concepts and practices and ability to use in complex, difficult and/or unprecedented situations.
Advertised Minimum Qualifications Must be academy certified and able to obtain Special State Police Officers License (SSPO) from the Colonel of the Massachusetts State Police. Graduate from an academy certified by the Municipal Police Training Council Academy, Special State Police Officer Training Academy, or Massachusetts Reserve Intermittent Training Academy. License to carry a firearm in Massachusetts. Must successfully pass a comprehensive background assessment that includes criminal history, driving record, medical examination, psychological evaluation including drug screening, and an inclusive appraisal of work history. 

This position requires driving a university vehicle or a personal vehicle on behalf of the university; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a motor vehicle history check and possess and maintain a current, valid driver’s license in their state of residence. Offers of employment are contingent upon meeting all minimum qualifications including the motor vehicle check requirement.

This position may regularly be required to work evenings and weekends.

The Boston University Police Department is a full-time, highly trained professional law enforcement agency with over 50 sworn officers. We provide a wide array of services including responding to and investigating criminal activity, crime prevention and awareness, critical incident response and management, personal safety education, and medical assists to name a few. We work collaboratively with other area colleges and universities, local and federal law enforcement to maximize the safety of our community from a myriad of potential threats.

All Boston University Police Officers are licensed by the Massachusetts State Police as Special State Police Officers, which empowers the officers to enforce criminal laws on campus and in the immediate environs.

Required Skills
At this time, the department is looking for candidates who are Massachusetts Municipal Police Academy trained and certified.

    • A demonstrated understanding of community policing within the context of the unique needs of a diverse, urban university community
      • A proven ability to understand the ways culture, race, gender, sexual orientation, religion, disability, and other aspects of identity are essential and may impact engagement with security forces. Likewise, a proven ability to be sensitive to the cultural contexts in which we live, particularly in relation to increased incidents of racial bias, harassment, or other forms of discriminatory behavior.
    • Excellent written and oral communication skills
    • An Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree is preferred. If candidates do not possess a degree, you will be strongly encouraged to take advantage of the very generous tuition remission benefit offered by Boston University.
    • Valid Massachusetts driver’s license
    • Qualifications to possess a Massachusetts license to carry firearms
    • Good judgment and independent decision making
    • Candidates will be required to pass a comprehensive criminal and financial background check, psychological examination and pre-employment medical exam

SHIFT ASSIGNMENTS

Shift work is subject to collective bargaining agreements between the University and the Boston University Police Patrol Officers Association. Boston University Police Patrol Officers Association

Candidates must be able to work all shifts, including holidays and weekends. Some overtime is mandatory and applicants are expected to understand this.

PAY

$27.37/hour
