We are looking for an individual who is passionate about welfare rights and supporting students. This role is all about empowering students to exercise their rights and options if they encounter problems during their time at university. This is through one-to-one advice, supported self-help and preventative campaigns. Alongside giving advice, we are looking for someone who would enjoy designing and delivering self-help materials and workshops, videos and information sessions.

You will need experience of giving advice and / or undertaking casework. We are looking for someone who will be able to support students professionally and with a high level of empathy. You will be working with some students who are facing difficult or complex circumstances including mental ill health, disabilities, financial hardship or who have experienced sexual violence or domestic abuse. You will be able to respond sensitively and compassionately to students in distress or facing crisis and will have experience in giving practical and emotional support.

Typical duties include

Provide specialist advice by various methods on a range of student issues including academic issues and regulations, University disciplinary procedures, housing, student finance, money advice, benefit entitlement, consumer problems, employment and general well-being. This will include supporting students to take action themselves or taking action on their behalf in exceptional circumstances.
Give practical advice and emotional support to students in crisis, facing difficult or complex circumstances including sexual violence, domestic abuse, mental ill health, bullying and harassment, disability, financial hardship and sexual misconduct cases. You may be working with the reporting or reported student.
Undertake legal research to assist clients and attend meetings and training events as necessary to enhance and develop specialist knowledge.
Manage your own caseload and undertake casework, prioritising time and workload accordingly, ensuring accurate, appropriate and confidential records are kept.
Develop and maintain relationships with colleagues within the Students’ Union, University and other advice providers, signposting and referring students where appropriate and using these networks to achieve the best possible outcomes for Advice Service users.
Monitor and report on trends across the issues students are facing and collect data or case studies to be used in campaigns, working with colleagues in the wider department to deliver these.
Develop self-help material for booklets, posters, website and campaigns on matters affecting students and support the delivery of workshops, training and information sessions to improve student welfare across a range of issues.
Provide support to student-led groups that provide information or advice – e.g. Nightline and the SU Peer Buddy Scheme.
Contribute to the work and development of student staff working in the Advice Service.
